SAVE on Elegantly Simple Backsplashes

Backsplashes are one of those items that homeowners have a hard time with. Should they go complex or colourful? Bold and patterned or simple and subdued? Should it match the countertop? They question themselves and change their minds.

Unless you have a clear, distinctive design vision in mind, my view when it comes to backsplashes is that oftentimes, simple is best. A backsplash can be beautiful without being busy. And for many modern kitchen and home designs, going with a simple, classic subway tile or other functional porcelain tile arranged in a geometric pattern with a thoughtfully chosen grout color is an easy choice. 

This is a great way to make any kitchen look amazing, and best of all, it’s super affordable and never goes out of style, so you’ll love your choice for longer. In case you DO change your mind down the line, you’ll be glad you went with a more affordable option. You don’t have to break the bank to have an elegantly simple and beautiful backsplash.

When choosing a backsplash, here are 3 key considerations to keep in mind:

✨ Material

From granite and stone to solid sheet (like stainless steel or glass) to tile, concrete and more, there are a lot of options when it comes to backsplashes. Salvaged materials like wood and metal can also be fun to work with, and match well with farmhouse-style homes. 

For cost-effectiveness, the best options to choose from are ceramic or porcelain tiles, which are very versatile and popular options. 

✨ Colour

If you’re going with a complex or colourful backsplash, you’ll probably do best with a solid countertop to balance things out. Showstopper countertop, like one that’s bold, patterned, or full of veins? Opt for a simpler, more subdued backsplash.

✨ Shape

Classic 3″x6″ subway tiles (brick shape) are still an interior design favourite. If you’re looking for something a little different, watch for fresh takes on the subway tile, with variations in colour, shape, or texture. Looking for some major drama? Consider a full-height backsplash.
