Happy Halloween! The peak day of the spooky season is here, and there’s no better time to chat about accessories. After all, what would Halloween be without these finishing touches that set the ambiance and are delightfully on-theme?
Read on for my take on accessorizing an interior space, including the difference good accessories can make and some tips on how to personalize a space for more authenticity.
Accessories can feel rather unimportant in the grand scheme of interior design. There are so many bigger considerations to take into account: finishes selections (from flooring to counter tops to fixtures), paint colours, space planning, furniture choices, lighting and more.
Clients sometimes want to know, “Do accessories REALLY make that big of a difference?” 🤔
Yes! They really do. Accessorizing is NOT a place that I recommend cutting corners.
Accessories are the final touch in an interior space — they complete a room and give it that lived-in feeling. Accessories also personalize a space, giving it more authenticity. Think of accessorizing a room the same as you would a great outfit — from unique jewellery to a stylish belt to a great pair of shades or a beautiful scarf, there’s no doubt that accessories can make or break a look!
Accessories can be functional (think pillows, throws, vases, candles and dishes) or entirely decorative (think statues and figurines, artwork, picture frames and plants/flowers). But what they all have in common is that they add that special something to a home to make it feel stylish, personal and homey. ✨
What’s more, selecting the right accessories for a space is a fine art. Read on for some of my top tips.
How to Accessorize like a Pro
Establish Your Personal Style
What impression do you want this home or space to make? What’s the vibe? Who lives here?
Use Different Textures
Create visual interest by incorporating a variety of different textures in your accessories.
Keep the Colour Scheme in Mind
Complement the space’s interior design, whether with a monochrome look or by using contrast.
Consider Size and Scale
Accessories should be of similar scale to the room they’re in — so they don’t get lost or over-dominate.
