How to Pick an Interior Design Style: My Top Tips (Part 2)

Share

Check out Part 1 of this series here.

There are so many interior design styles available these days, and many of us are naturally drawn to several of them.

But there’s a problem with that, and a reason that interior design professionals frequently recommend choosing just one or two (or sometimes three!) interior design styles.

When you pick an interior design style and commit to it, you end up with a space that’s so much more cohesive and put-together, and that tells a story. It helps you create a really solid look, and it keeps you focused when you’re shopping for interior design pieces, whether it’s furniture or lighting. It keeps you on track, and helps create a real “look”, rather than a random collection of pieces that spoke to you in the store.

And so, as I said in Part 1 of this blog post, whether you’re choosing a design style for your own home or for a business project like a new home model or condo model suite, it’s important to pick a style that reflects the vibe you’re trying to create in the space – the feeling that you want the residents to have, as my podcast guest Hollis Rendleman discussed on Episode #35 of The Productive Designer podcast – and that attracts the type of buyer you’re trying to target, if you’re selling new homes or condos.

Not sure where to start? Check out Part 1 for a breakdown of some of the major interior design styles and trends, and who they can be a good fit for, and read on for the next batch of styles:

Industrial

What it looks like: Open floor plans, floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed building materials like ducts, pipes, beams, and brick or concrete walls, with interior design elements including leather, metal, and rustic wood; think loft apartments from factory conversions or other industrial areas converted into residential neighbourhoods

When it’s a good choice: For urban condos and modern professionals, or to create a cool and sophisticated vibe (this is not a soft or intimate vibe – it’s more masculine and raw)

Boho

What it looks like: Layers of textures and patterns and colours, bold and bright patterns and colours, lots of plants and greenery, a carefree look, woven wall hangings, rattan furniture, and special one-of-a-kind pieces collected from all over the world

Related: Tropical (think bold palm leaf prints, thatched furnishings, and other décor items that bring to mind lush jungles and vibrant beaches), Shabby Chic (think distressed furniture, furnishings painted in weathered white paint, antiques, white linen), and Eclectic (think culture-rich interiors with a mix of styles and influences, a worldly vibe with layers of colours and textures)

When it’s a good choice: For travellers, free spirits, unconventional folks, and modern day hippies; when you want a fresh, artistic, and eclectic vibe

Modern Farmhouse

What it looks like: Cozy and warm, big comfy couches, neutrals, salvaged wood furnishings and flooring, wide plank flooring, shiplap accent walls, barn doors, wrought iron accents and mixed metals, non-fussy antiques, and open-concept designs

Related: Coastal (think lots of whites and blues with nautical vibes), French Country (think aged metals, distressed wood, a mix of patterns such as stripes and florals, and anything that makes you think of Provence), and Rustic (think lots of natural materials, industrial touches, and rustic charm)

When it’s a good choice: For cottages, families, and cozy living that makes you think of the countryside and nature

Art Deco

What it looks like: Geometric patterns and shapes, streamlined, sleek forms, chrome hardware, glass tops, mirrored accents, lots of metals, pointed edges, and jagged corners

When it’s a good choice: For artists and people who want that Miami Beach vibe

Hollywood Glam

What it looks like: A mix of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern but that is here to make a big impact; high-contrast colour combos, black and white, over-the-top chandeliers, mirrored furniture and accessories

When it’s a good choice: For a sexy, sophisticated, and luxurious vibe that’s almost over the top
